I am researching the life of Hélène (Elaine) Vagliano, the daughter of the golfer Marino Vagliano and his wife Danaë. The Vagliano family lived at Ascot Grange, next to the racecourse, from at least 1919 to 1923. Danaë Vagliano described her garden there as having a lake 'with swans as white as snow'. I believe part of this garden is now The Grange Car Park in Ascot. In 1923 the family moved to Cannes in the south of France and Elaine became a boarder at St. George's, Ascot until 1927. In 1943, now living with her family in Cannes, Elaine joined the French Resistance, was captured by the Gestapo and, with great bravery, refused to give any information about her fellow Resistants. She was murdered by the Gestapo in August 1944 as the Allies invaded the beaches of southern France.
I wonder if anyone has any information about the Vagliano family, their connections in Ascot and their house, Ascot Grange, i.e. the age of the house, its architecture, previous owners etc. I would be most grateful. With many thanks. Maureen Emerson
