Bisham milestone

The milestone in Bisham features the mileage to Hatfield quite promiently. Does any one know why this should be as I cannot trace any direct road from Bisham to Hatfield, especially at the time the stone would have been erected. There are much larger towns of more 'stature' between.

The Hatfield and Reading Turnpike Trust took over the maintenance of this road in 1768, and I believe that they put the original milestones in along its length - there is - or was - a whole series of them. In essence, it is the modern A404, which until relatively recently ran from the Bath Road at Burchetts Green through Marlow to High Wycombe, Amersham, and Rickmansworth onwards. Hatfield and Reading being the 'termini' of the Turnpike, they are the places listed on the milestones.
